Super Bowl 48

The Seattle Seahawks, my favorite football team are facing the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 48. I predict the Seattle Seahawks will bring home the Lombardi Trophy. The big difference in the game is the Seahawks defense. The Seahawks defense anchored by Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas. The Seattle Seahawks will prove they are the better team by beating the Broncos.

Islandwood

My class and I went to Islandwood a school in the woods. Islandwood is located on  Bainbridge island, about 15 minutes from the ferry. At Islandwood we stayed at a lodge called Birds Nest. Every day we would leave our lodge at 7:20 and go to the Dining Hall for breakfast. After breakfast our class would go to Daven in a different room. After davening we would join 4 other schools in a place called Friendship circle, where we would wait until they were finished with davening and then we would go into our field groups my group was called Pond. There were many other field groups. In your field groups there would be one instructor, about 8 kids and one chaperone. Then you would spend the rest of the day until 4:30 with your field group playing games taking hikes and doing different activities.

My favorite activity was going to Blakely harbor. At the harbor you could see the place where there was a  mill. The mill  had people coming from all over the world to come to cut the trees and float them down the harbor.

Self Reflection

 I think I did well on punctuation and spelling. I also I think I did well on putting the paragraphs in order and finding information and quotes for it. I think so because when I read it out loud to myself it sounded good.

I think I need to work on making it a little shorter. I would say this because my paper was 541 words and 2 pages. When most other people's were quite a bit shorter.  

The Pacific Herring are in danger by Josh

     What happened to the Pacific Herring habitat in the Prince William Sound? It is 60% less than it was before. PCBs and PBDEs are killing them mostly. PCBs were banned in 1979, 35 years. What is happening to the Pacific Herring population?

The Pacific herring have many predators not only fish.Large fish, Pacific Salmon, Seals and Orcas are eating the Pacific Herring. The biggest enemy of the Pacific Herring are PBDEs and PCBs. PCBs were banned in 1979 but take a long time to dissolve, so the Pacific Herring are still dying. PCBs and PBDEs are 6-7 times more in Pacific Herring than in any other fish. This causes them to die much more. For example, Independent fisheries scientist Alexandrea Morton is raising concern about diseases. She says “It is spreading through Pacific Herring causing fish to hemorrhage.” Alexandrea Morton also saw about 100 Pacific Herring bleeding from their bellies, fins and eyeballs. These are very, very strong disease symptoms. Another example, Dr. Gary Marty, a fish pathologist with the Animal health center for the British of Columbia ministry of environment, said V.H.S.V and V.E.N, are the two most likely suspects.

The Pacific Herring are dying rapidly. In the winter of 1992/93 about 60% of the Pacific Herring population in the Prince William Sound were dying. The Prince William Sound is in Alaska. The Exxon Valdez oil spill killed majority of the Pacific Herring in the Prince William Sound. The fisheries oceanography examined bird diets in the Prince William Sound, most of the bird’s diets was Herring spawn. Those bird species ate 857.1 metric tons of Herring, Representing 31% of the estimated spawn deposition. Lorena Hamer, a spokesperson for the Herring conservation and research society founded by the Herring Fishing Industry said in an email “I do hope that the D.F.O is following upon this. It would be good to get confirmation of the disease and more information of the extent of the infection.” For example, the population of the once large stock of Pacific Herring, the spring spawning Cherry Point stock in the North Puget Sound, has declined 90% since 1973. Overall other Herring stocks in Puget Sound have shown little trend over the past 40 years. For example, in Canada the Government is ignoring the problem. Another example, The Exxon Valdez oil spill caused billions of Herring eggs to die.

There is a big difference to the food chain with the Pacific Herring dying. The predators of the Pacific Herring Salmon, Trout, Large Fish, Seals and Orcas will be dying, because the Pacific herring will be dying and they will have not enough food. The animals that are ate by Salmon, Trout, Large Fish, Seals and Orcas will be dying rapidly because there will be less Pacific Herring and their predators will eat them more. That means the Ocean and Lakes will be much different.

Imagine if every person dumps waste into the Puget Sound and other Lakes, the Pacific Herring and other fish will die. It will be a huge effect on people’s diets including mine. I eat Herring on Saturday and fish 1-3 times a week. It will make a difference to your life and diet. Won’t it?

On January 2^ndwas my birthday. The best present I got on my birthday was a Kindle. It was one of the best birthday presents I got in my life. I have downloaded 4 books in 3 days. The books are Rush for the Gold Mystery at the Olympics by John Feinstein. The three others are Travel Team by Mike Lupica, Foul Trouble by John Feinstein and I, Robot by Isaac Asimov.

It is very amazing that I can read hundreds of books on it. Instead of buying the book you want to read you can just go to your public library’s website and check the book out as an e-book. Then you download it on to your Kindle.

 

Reading Blog Post.

I have read Foul Trouble by John Feinstein, the genre is Realistic Fiction. If I were to give this book a different title I would give it the name Road to College. I would name it this because the whole book is about Terrell Jamerson the number 1 high school basketball player and Danny Wilcox being recruited by coaches from all over the United States.

While I was reading the book I had a connection. That I have read many books and newspapers about high school basketball players having a hard time choosing a college. That is exactly what was hard for Terrell Jamerson and Danny Wilcox.
