Megillat Ruth

Chapter One:

The story of Megillat Ruth begins with Elimelech, his wife Naomi and their two sons Machlon and Chilion. Elimelech gets tired of poor people going up to his doorstep and begging for food (Rashi). So they moved from Bethlehem to Moab. In Moab Machlon and Chilion marry two Moabite women known as Ruth and Orpah. After a little bit Elimelech, Machlon and Chilion die leaving Ruth, Orpah and Naomi widows. Then Naomi said “Return to your mother’s houses and may Hashem deal kindly with you as you have dealt kindly with you. Ruth and Orpah replied “No we will return with you to your people.” Naomi convinced Orpah to go but Ruth remained.

Naomi said to Ruth “Look your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods, return after your sister-in-law. But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back from following you. “For where you go I will go; where you lodge I will lodge; your people are my people, and your god is my god; where you die I will die and be buried.”

When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to stay she stopped arguing. When they arrived in Bethlehem everyone was asking is this Naomi and Naomi said Call me Mara not Naomi for my life has turned around. This is the time of the Barley Harvest.

The Yom Kippur War

The Yom Kippur War

By Josh

I think Israel should have launched a pre-emptive strike because Israel lost 2,500 troops because Israel did not launch a pre-emptive strike. If Israel had launched a pre-emptive strike then they would have lost much less troops. Golda Meir’s decision was wrong because the United States would have supplied Israel almost always.

Lake Chad

The segment I found most interesting was on Lake Chad. Lake Chad was the sixth largest lake in the world. I knew Lake Chad was in Chad but I did not know it was also located in Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon. Lake Chad which used to be the sixth largest lake is now one tenth of what it was 45 years ago. Since the water is disappearing, the inhabitants don't have enough water to water their crops and the fishermen are having a hard time catching fish.

There were many problems I noted, but several I found immensely intriguing. One of the major problems is that the people depend greatly on the water supply for everything. If the water disappears then the people will have no nourishment. There was a conflict between the fishermen and the crop owners. The fishermen wanted the water to stay so they could fish and the crop owners wanted the water for their crops. Another issue is climate change, if Africa has less carbon pollution then why is this happening?

Debriefing Project

What were the Challenges and Disagreements in the colonies leading up to the war?
In my opinion the statement "Taxation without representation" is an untrue statement. I think this because Parliament has the right to tax the colonies because they own the land. Patrick Henry was accused of treason. Many colonists were shouting at Patrick Henry the word Treason because of his speech. He was not arrested for this.

Independence

In class we have done 2 out of 3 congresses the Stamp act congress and the second Continental congress.

I have really enjoyed this so far because I enjoy the American Revolution. Not much was hard for me because I read books on the American Revolution and I know a lot of information about it. For the first Continental congress our teacher videotaped it here is the link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzhCK0zbuDRucDBhU20wNG14TEE&usp=sharing.

Independence Simulation in the American Revolution.

In class we are doing an independence simulation. To do this each kid in our class is given a fake name and details about them. You also are a part of a faction. The factions are Loyalist, Patriot and neutralist. I have the name Cornelius Van Renaslaar and I am a Loyalist. I am the chairperson and delegate for the Loyalists. That means I will lead discussions and speak.

I have really enjoyed this so far because I enjoy the American Revolution. Not much was hard for me because I read books on the American Revolution and I know a lot of information about it.

Marquis de Lafayette

“Hero of two worlds”

Marquis de Lafayette was challenged while he was outnumbered in Virginia against General Charles Cornwallis. In the same battle he achieved his main achievement. According to World Book Online “He wanted military glory when he came.” According to World Book Online “He sailed on a ship with soldiers to help the colonies. Without his help, America would still belong to Great Britain.

Literary Self-Reflection

I think I did well in getting my Literary Essay done on time and Publishing it on the blog. I think I did well on this because I was one of the first people to finish typing and publishing it.

Something that was hard for me was writing down information in the book. To get as information. What I didn't like was that I had to write information while we were reading the book Because of Winn-Dixie.

Narrative Self-Reflection

What I enjoyed about writing my narrative was I got to think about what happened with what I did with my brother. I felt that one of my strengths was thinking of what happened and finishing on time.

Something that was hard for me was, writing what I was thinking while reading. I dislike this because I enjoy talking to people about books instead of writing about it.

Science Expo Reflection

I played the part in the Science Expo of telling people about pH levels and making posters. I made the posters by  going online and researching graphs and information.
I enjoyed the Science Expo because I got to teach people about pH and learning things from other classes.

Because of Zach

Ka-baam now it hit me I am now an older brother. When Zach was born and came home, I wanted to hold him very much. The reason for this is he was very small and something inside me was saying ask your mom, ask your mom. So I asked my mom, and after a few minutes she replied yes. I treasured the moment because it has happened only once to me. It was very enjoyable to do.
When he was about 5 years old, he got into Legos. Then you would hear sounds coming from our playroom. For example, “Baaaam” and “Why did you do that.” By then I was eight and a half and had hundreds of Legos. So of course he asked me if he could build with them and the conversation went like this:
“Josh, can I build with your Legos.”
“All right”
When he turned seven years old he got 600 Lego blocks and a 15 by 15 platform. After he got it he dashed upstairs to start building. After a little bit he became quite good and then you would hear sounds like:
“Why isn’t this working?”
And I would reply “What did you do?”
Now we play every morning for 20-30 minutes, it is very pleasurable to do it.
When my dad tried to teach me biking I would not do it. But when my dad taught Zach he loved it. After that when I went to play outside he would be in my way whizzing around on his bike and it was very annoying. He liked it so much he requested to have his bike left outside so he could use it when he wanted to.
After getting into Biking he was not done instead of doing Baseball or basketball he chose to do swimming. I was glad about that but not for long. Soon we started arguing about who is a better swimmer. This changed my life because than my dad would take us to go swimming at the beach or at a swimming pool.
We will sometimes fight. For example, “Owwwwwwww.” That is what happens. These fights can be caused by almost anything. I enjoy arguing because I would make a good lawyer at least that is what my mom says another example, in the courtroom there are sounds like this: “Get to the point.”
The confusing thing is that we look alike we both have brown hair and brown eyes. A lot of people say that he is a miniature me.
When Zach started his clubs it was very annoying and it still is. Since Zach was born on July 20 we googled who else has the birthday July 20. What we found out was that he has the same birthday as Alexander the Great.
The final result is that he is a good brother. Even though he does things I may not like. The moral of this story is: “Be good to your siblings and they will be good back.” That is what my mom says.

Because of Winn-Dixie.

The more friends the better. In Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal has no friends in the beginning, but in the middle of the book she has many friends. One of Opal’s many friends Gloria Dump is old and another friend is almost 6. That means you can have friends of all ages. Because of Winn-Dixie Opal’s dog Opal has many friends.
Opal has made tons of friends most of them because of Winn-Dixie. One of Opal’s first friends Miss Franny the librarian. Opal became friends with her because Opal asked her to bring Winn-Dixie into the library to hear the story that Miss Franny was about to tell and she said yes and when Miss Franny got frightened Winn-Dixie comforted her. Winn-Dixie also had a Littmus Lozenge and it amazed Miss Franny that a dog would eat a candy. When Opal became friends with Otis who works at the pet shop. That happened because of Winn-Dixie. When Winn-Dixie wanted a collar from the pet shop Opal went in to buy it but she did not have enough money to buy it so she asked for a job to pay off for it so when Opal started working there, you’re not going to believe what happened next! Opal became friends with Otis. That happened because Winn-Dixie helped establish that friendship.
Opal’s friendship with Gloria Dump happened because of Winn-Dixie. Without Winn-Dixie Opal would have never met Gloria Dump. For example, when Winn-Dixie went into Gloria Dump’s garden and Opal went in to get him even though the Dewberry boys Stevie and Dunlap said “You better not go into the witch’s house.” In fact immediately after Opal went in she became good friends with Gloria Dump. Opal’s friendship with Gloria Dump was important. For instance, it made a difference because there was a party at Gloria Dump’s house and then Opal became good friends with one of the Dewberry boys which was Dunlap. Gloria Dump without the party and without Opal she probably would die alone because barely any people knew her. When Opal came in and became her friend that was probably Gloria’s first real friend.
With more friends you can achieve more. Opal has many friends that is the same with me. With friends you can become President or anything if you really try. Try to achieve what you want with friends, and then what you want might, just might happen.

Trimester Reflection

I am very proud of probably everything. I think this because I am really good at math and ecosystems. I feel that there was not anything that was really hard for me.

I feel I am good at everything because I have completed a lot of work and I am proud of it. I think I want to improve on writing down my thoughts on the books I read.

The Talking Earth

I am currently reading the book The Talking Earth by Jean Craighead George. I think the moral of the story was that you should not always have to believe people. In the book the main character Billie Wind had to obey the medicine man Charlie Wind who is also her uncle. When Billie's sister said that Billie did not believe In serpents he sent her off to see them.

I think this because in the story she has to go off because Charlie wants her to see the serpents. When Billie sees the serpents she does not no how to get back.
